community

congratulations to our first change in action award winners!

This Spring, our first annual change in action awards were handed out to four students in the Longmeadow Public School System. The winners were chosen by their principals and teachers based on the following criteria:

  1. Someone who has spoken up and stood up for a fellow student who has been bullied, refusing to be the bystander but instead being an agent of positive change.
  2. Someone who has led by example, befriending students without concern for popularity, status, or what effect it will or won’t have for their own social status.
  3. Someone who has led his/her peers toward building a more bonded community among all the students in the school.
  4. Someone who has shown they are willing to do what is right and not necessarily what is popular.

This year's winners are:

Catherine Camerota and Samantha Layman from Longmeadow High School

and

Taylor Ditmar and Natalie Frechette from Wolfswamp Elementary Schoolaward winners

jcc hosts free change in action enrichment course

We ran a free, 10 week, after-school enrichment course for elementary school students at the Springfield JCC. This course engaged the kids in activities geared toward helping them think and talk about their sense of community and community responsibility and gave them some skills they can use outside of the class.

This course was open to the general public and had 12 students enrolled.

teacher appreciation fundraiser a success

teacher fundraiserDuring the month of December 2010, we raised over $300 and handed out nearly 50 teacher appreciation certificates.  With the money raised, change in action purchased 23 books that were donated to the various school libraries and town library.  Thanks to all who honored their teachers and supported the change!
